Bwindi Impenetrable forest National Park- Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi national park is found in the South Western part of the Uganda next to the Democratic Republic of Congo bordering with Virunga National Park and on the edge of the Albertine Rift.  The Park is UNESCO World heritage site because of the mountain gorillas which are among the most engendered species as primates only found in Africa.

Apart from Bwindi Impenetrable national park , Mountain gorillas are only found in Virunga National park, Mgahinga National Park & Volcanoes national park Rwanda.  Mountain gorilla trekking  is one of the most popular activity in all the four national park.

Bwindi National Park is most notable for the 400 Bwindi gorillas, half of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorillas and the recent population census showed that Uganda has more mountain gorillas than Rwanda & Democratic republic of Congo.

Bwindi has 14 habituated mountain gorilla groups are open to tourism in four different sectors of Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and the Nkuringo in the Districts of Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro. Once you have booked gorilla trekking in Uganda, expect to see the gorillas in any of the selected sectors.

Mountain gorillas

The mountain gorilla is one of the two subspecies of the eastern gorilla. There are two populations: One is found in the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa, within 3 National Parks: Mgahinga, in south-west Uganda; Volcanoes, in north-west Rwanda; and Virunga, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The mountain gorilla is listed as endangered by the IUCN as of 2018. The other population is found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The park is inhabited by about 800 individual mountain gorillas known as the Bwindi population, which makes up almost half of all the mountain gorillas in the world.The rest of the worldwide mountain gorilla population is in the nearby Virunga Mountains. A 2006 census of the mountain gorilla population in the park showed that its numbers had increased as per the 2019 Census

Nearest towns

Kabale, Kisoro  towns to the south-east are the nearest main towns to the park, 29 kilometres (18 mi) away by road.  The park is composed of two blocks of forest that are connected by a corridor of forest. The shape of the park is a legacy of previous conservation management, when the original two forest blocks were protected in 1932.
