Maiko National Park is found in a remote forest area in DRC. Its biodiversity is of great significance to the nation. This includes Grauer’s gorilla and the okapi. Within this area lies the Mai Mai rebels (for over 50 years now) and has played in the political conflicts going on in the country making the area difficult to access.

The monitoring and protection of the park is done by working with both the Congolese conservation authorities (ICCN – Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature) and local stakeholders, including the Simba Mai Mai, FZS (Frankfurt Zoological Society).
